The Sub-Zero water path, part by part
Nineteen components stand between a valve in a cupboard and a cube in the bin. They are listed here in the order the water reaches them, because that is the order a fault has to be ruled out in — and because most of what gets blamed on the module happens before the module.

From the house
The plumbing side: whatever the house does to the water before it reaches the cabinet.
- Shutoff valve and saddle valve The tap that isolates the appliance, and the fitting that took the water off the house pipe in the first place.
- Supply line to the unit The run between the shutoff and the back of the cabinet, and the single most-searched fault on this site.
- Pressure regulator The house device that decides whether the ice maker gets a steady fill or a different one every hour.
Into the cabinet
Where the line becomes the appliance — the valve that meters the fill and the filter it passes through.
- Water inlet valve The solenoid that opens for a measured number of seconds and decides how full the mould gets.
- Filter housing and manifold The fitting the cartridge twists into, and the reason a filter change can end in a drip.
- Water filter cartridge The one part of the water path an owner is meant to change, and the one blamed for most things it did not do.
- Filter bypass plug What goes into the manifold when no cartridge does, and why the space cannot simply be left empty.
Into the mould
The short run of tube that delivers a measured fill into a compartment below freezing.
- Fill tube A few inches of tube carrying room-temperature water into a compartment well below freezing.
- Fill tube heater The small heat source that is meant to stop the fill point icing shut between cycles.
Making the cube
The module itself: freeze, release, eject, and decide whether to do it again.
- Sub-Zero ice maker module The head unit that times the freeze, calls for water, drives the ejector and counts the cycle.
- Ice mould and mould heater The tray the cube forms in, and the warmth that frees it again a few seconds before the ejector turns.
- Mould thermostat The sensor that has to agree the cube is frozen before anything else in the cycle is allowed to happen.
- Harvest motor and ejector The gearmotor and the blades that sweep a finished cube out of the mould and into the bin.
- Shutoff arm and ice-level sensor How the machine knows the bin is full — and the commonest reason a working ice maker stops for no reason.
Storing and draining
Where the ice waits and where the meltwater goes — the half of an undercounter machine most owners never see.
- Ice bin and bucket An unrefrigerated box that has to sit square, or the machine stops and the cubes weld together.
- Clear-ice evaporator The cold surface a clear-ice machine grows cubes on, layer by layer, instead of filling a tray.
- Water circulation pump What keeps water moving over the plate, and the part scale reaches before anything else in the machine.
- Drain line and air gap Where the meltwater goes, and the reason a machine that makes ice perfectly well still floods a cabinet.
- Drain pump Fitted where the drain cannot fall away on its own, and the first suspect when a cabinet floor is wet.
