The line, the valve and the pressure
Is a saddle valve acceptable for a Sub-Zero?
Not the self-piercing kind. Sub-Zero's wording is short — "do not use self-piercing valves" — because they "will not supply enough water flow to be effective". Sub-Zero also lists a saddle valve of its own as an accessory, so not every fitting called a saddle is ruled out. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts treats a piercing one as the first suspect behind a short fill.
Pattern
What we usually find
- The needle hole scaled almost shut. It was a small opening on the day it was made, and mineral closes it slowly from the inside.
- A rubber saddle gasket gone hard, so the clamp weeps onto the pipe and the stain arrives long before the drip does.
- The handle seized part-open, which reads as a working valve and passes a fraction of the flow the mould needs.
- A piercing valve fitted to soft copper that has since work-hardened around the clamp.
Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.
How to tell what is fitted, without tools
A saddle sits as a small clamp wrapped round a copper pipe, usually under a sink or in the basement, with a knurled handle on one side and the ice maker tubing leaving the other. A proper stop valve looks like any other shut-off: soldered or threaded into the pipe, with the pipe cut through.
What replacing one involves
Cutting the supply pipe and fitting a stop valve is plumbing, so it goes to a plumber, and the right order is to have that done before anyone judges the valve on the unit. A starved fill and a tired inlet valve look identical from the kitchen.
Before you call
Two minutes, before anyone comes out
- Find the valve on the line and see whether it is a clamp round the pipe.
- Trace the tubing from the cabinet back to wherever it leaves the pipe.
- Note the clock when the bin is emptied and count what has arrived by bedtime.
