The line, the valve and the pressure

Can the water line freeze in an outside wall?

It can, and it is the fault that arrives without a sound. A supply run through an unheated crawl space, a garage wall or an outside wall will freeze on a cold night, and the machine keeps cycling with nothing to fill. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts separates that from a fill tube frozen inside the freezer, which looks identical from the kitchen.

Pattern

What we usually find

  1. A line added later for an ice maker, taken the short way through an outside wall instead of the long way through warm space.
  2. A run across an unheated crawl space or an attached garage — common enough in the older bungalows around Berkeley and Wheat Ridge, where the kitchen plumbing was extended rather than planned.
  3. The fill tube inside the freezer icing instead, which Sub-Zero links to pressure swings, a bin left out, or water shut off with the ice maker still switched on.
  4. A shut-off in an unheated basement corner, where the valve body freezes before the pipe either side of it does.

Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.

What not to do

Nothing warm, nothing flame, nothing forced. A concealed pipe cannot be seen while it is being heated, and a split section does its damage the moment the ice releases, when nobody is standing there. Thawing a buried run is a plumber’s job, and so is the lagging that stops it happening again.

Telling the two freezes apart

A frozen supply leaves no water anywhere on that branch. A frozen fill tube leaves the rest of the house normal and usually leaves a plug of ice at the back of the freezer compartment, which Sub-Zero has owners clear by switching the unit off for four to six hours.

Before you call

Two minutes, before anyone comes out

  1. Turn the ice maker off if the water has been shut off for any reason.
  2. Check the garage or crawl space for a bare length of tubing.
  3. See whether the fill returns on its own once the weather lifts.

Stop there. If that has not settled it by the next morning, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the rest of the water path gets traced with a meter.
