The line, the valve and the pressure
What water pressure does a Sub-Zero ice maker need?
Sub-Zero publishes two working ranges rather than one figure — 20 to 100 psi, or 35 to 120 psi — and which of them applies depends on the model. It also says plainly that it supplies no tool, meter or procedure for confirming the pressure at the unit, and sends owners to a plumber. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts reads the symptom instead: a fill that ends early.
Pattern
What we usually find
- Pressure that is adequate at rest and sags under load. Everything in the house draws on the same supply, and the ice maker fills on a timer.
- A partly closed shut-off somewhere on the run, left that way after work in the kitchen and never opened fully again.
- Scale narrowing the inlet screen on the unit, which has the same effect as low pressure without the house being at fault.
- A regulator past its life, so the whole house sits lower than it once did and only the ice shows it.
Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.
What low pressure looks like in the bin
The mould is filled by time, not by volume: the valve opens for a set interval and whatever arrives is what freezes. Drop the pressure and the same interval delivers less, so the cubes come out thin, then hollow, then stop arriving while the machine goes on cycling.
Why a gauge is a plumber’s errand
Sub-Zero does not publish a method for taking the reading, and the useful place to take it is the house side rather than the appliance side. A booster or a fresh regulator is plumbing work; what sits on this side of the fitting is the valve, the screen and the fill.
Before you call
Two minutes, before anyone comes out
- Open every shut-off on the ice maker line as far as it will go.
- Run a kitchen tap full bore and see whether the flow holds steady.
- Ask the plumber for a reading taken at a hose bib, not a guess.
Stop there. If that has not settled it by the next morning, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the rest of the water path gets traced with a meter.
