Filters and cartridges
Does Denver water need softening for clear ice?
Softening is a decision taken for a whole house, not an ice maker fix. Sub-Zero puts cloudy ice and white flecks down to mineral deposits in the water and suggests an inline filter where discolouration is the complaint. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts cares about hardness for what it leaves on an inlet screen and a mould.
Pattern
What we usually find
- Scale closing the inlet valve screen, built up quietly over years. This is the mineral problem that costs you ice, and a cartridge in the door does not prevent it.
- A dull mineral film on the mould, which changes how cleanly cubes release and makes a late harvest look like a failing heater.
- A softener in the house but bypassed at the kitchen cold line, so the ice maker drinks hard water while everything else does not.
- Cloudy cubes with nothing wrong behind them. Minerals concentrate as ice dries and thaws, and Sub-Zero describes exactly that as the cause.
Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.
What minerals actually cost you
Not clarity. The bill for hard water is paid at the inlet screen, where a fine mesh closes a little each year and every fill gets shorter, and at the mould, where a film makes the cubes let go late. Neither arrives as a complaint about water. Both arrive as an ice maker quietly going off.
Where a softener fits, and where it does not
A softener is specified, plumbed and maintained by a plumber, and what it changes is the entire supply. That makes it their call to recommend rather than ours, and the supply is not the same everywhere in this sector. What we can offer is a look at the inside of your own unit, so the decision rests on evidence.
Before you call
Two minutes, before anyone comes out
- Change the cartridge before drawing any conclusion about the water itself.
- Freeze a tray from another tap and compare it against the machine's.
- Ask whoever fitted a softener whether the kitchen cold line was included.
That is as far as an owner should take it. If what you find does not match this page, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the water path gets measured end to end.
