Can a Sub-Zero run without a filter?

Running unfiltered is something Sub-Zero decides for you in one situation: on a reverse-osmosis supply it advises bypassing an internal push-in or twist-in filter. Away from that case, what a given cabinet does with the cartridge out is a question about its manifold, and Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts settles it against the model rather than in general.

Pattern

What we usually find

  1. A reverse osmosis system fitted after the kitchen was built, with the internal cartridge still in the manifold because nobody mentioned the guidance.
  2. A cartridge left out after a change because the replacement never arrived, and an owner with no way of knowing whether that is safe.
  3. Filtered water blamed for a taste that came out of the bin. Pulling the cartridge changes nothing, because the water was never the source.
  4. A second filter already under the sink, so the internal cartridge is the third restriction in a row and the fill has quietly slowed.

Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.

What Sub-Zero actually says

The published position is narrow and worth taking literally. For models with an internal water filter installed, push in or twist in, Sub-Zero advises bypassing that internal filter when the unit is connected to a reverse osmosis system. It is guidance about one kind of supply, not an invitation to run every cabinet without a cartridge.

Why the answer depends on the cabinet

A cartridge lives in a manifold, and the manifold stays in the water path whether anything is screwed into it or not. What that manifold wants in the cartridge’s place is not the same across generations, so the honest reply to whether you can simply leave it out is that it is a question about your unit.

Before you call

Two minutes, before anyone comes out

  1. Establish whether a reverse osmosis unit or an under sink filter feeds this line.
  2. Shut the water off at the supply valve before a cartridge comes out.
  3. Have the model designation to hand before ordering or leaving one out.

That is as far as an owner should take it. If what you find does not match this page, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the water path gets measured end to end.
