Filters and cartridges

How often should the water filter be changed?

Sub-Zero's replacement instructions hand the timing to a water filter life monitor built into the control, not to a diary. When the monitor calls for one, the old cartridge turns out counterclockwise a quarter turn and the new one goes in clockwise until it seats. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts reads that monitor before blaming a valve.

Pattern

What we usually find

  1. A cartridge nobody has touched since the kitchen was finished. The monitor was cleared once, the habit lapsed, and the indicator has said the same thing ever since.
  2. A change that happened but was never registered on the control, so the monitor means nothing and the old cartridge is the only evidence left.
  3. Scale reaching the inlet screen while the cartridge is still well inside its life. Filtering is not softening, and a filter in date keeps no minerals off a valve.
  4. A cartridge changed on time but pushed home rather than turned home. It looks fitted, it is not sealed, and the fill has been short since.

Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.

What runs a cartridge down

Water does, and no two households ask the same of one. A unit filling a bin all week and feeding a dispenser works a cartridge far harder than one in a guest kitchen. That is why the control carries a monitor at all, and why a date copied off a neighbour is a poor guide to your own.

What a late cartridge does to the ice

Flow goes before taste does. A restriction shows as hollow or undersized cubes long before anyone notices anything in a glass, so a falling bin level is worth treating as a filter question first. If the cubes stay short after a fresh cartridge and a full day, the restriction is elsewhere on the path.

Before you call

Two minutes, before anyone comes out

  1. Read what the filter indicator is actually showing before ordering anything.
  2. Write the date on the body of the new cartridge before it goes in.
  3. Throw away the first full bucket of ice after a change.

That is as far as an owner should take it. If what you find does not match this page, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the water path gets measured end to end.
