Water where it should not be

Why does the valve buzz but no water arrives?

The buzz says the coil is energised, so the module is calling and the wiring behind it is intact. What the buzz cannot say is whether anything came through. When the call is answered and the mould stays dry, the restriction sits ahead of the valve or inside it. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts works up the path from the shut-off rather than down from the module.

Pattern

What we usually find

  1. The inlet screen packed with scale. It is the narrowest point in the whole path, and the first surface hard water leaves a deposit on.
  2. A shut-off standing only part open, usually left that way after a remodel or after the unit was last pulled out.
  3. Supply pressure under what the model asks for. Sub-Zero puts the requirement at 20 to 100 psi on some units and 35 to 120 on others.
  4. The valve itself: a solenoid humming against a diaphragm it can no longer lift clear of the seat.

Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.

What the buzz rules out

It rules out the electrical half of the fault, which is most of what a technician would otherwise spend the first half hour proving. A silent valve sends the search to the module, the harness and the control; a buzzing one sends it to water, and that is a shorter list to work through.

Pressure is where it usually ends, and where it stops being ours. Sub-Zero supplies no tool, meter or procedure for confirming the pressure reaching a unit and points owners at a plumber instead. We can show that the valve opens and that too little follows; putting more behind it is plumbing work on the house, not on the cabinet.

Before you call

Two minutes, before anyone comes out

  1. Confirm the shut-off feeding the ice maker is open all the way, not part way.
  2. Fit a fresh cartridge if nobody can remember when the last one went in.
  3. Allow three hours after any change before deciding nothing has happened.

Stop there. If that has not settled it by the next morning, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the rest of the water path gets traced with a meter.
