No ice at all
How do I switch a Sub-Zero ice maker on or off?
On a Classic built-in it is the Ice Maker key on the control panel along the top of the unit, visible once the door is open, with a single cube icon lit while it runs and nothing showing when it is off. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts adds the part owners miss: switching the ice maker off does not switch the water off.
Pattern
What we usually find
- An ice maker turned off months earlier and forgotten about, which is the commonest reason a cabinet in good order produces nothing whatever.
- A shut-off arm lifted clear while the bin was out and never put back down, so the machine goes on believing there is no room.
- A holiday where the ice maker went off and the supply stayed on, leaving the line standing full behind a closed appliance for weeks.
- A control nobody recognised. One generation gives you a key on a panel, another a touch control, an older cabinet a mechanical arm.
Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.
Off at the control is not off at the tap
Sub-Zero says in as many words that turning the ice maker off leaves the water supply running, and asks for the household supply or the line valve to be shut before an extended absence. A charged line behind an idle ice maker is how a kitchen floor gets found wet by somebody who has been away.
When there is no key where you expect one
Controls have changed across generations, and one cabinet will hand you an arm where the next hands you a screen. Describe what is actually in front of you when you ring and the right procedure is easy to name.
Before you call
Two minutes, before anyone comes out
- Open the door and look along the top edge of the cabinet for the ice maker key.
- If the cabinet has a wire arm, see that it is sitting down rather than raised.
- Before a long absence, close the shut-off valve on the water line as well.
