The line, the valve and the pressure

Do I need a plumber or an appliance technician?

Wet in front of the compression fitting at the back of the cabinet, it is ours; wet behind it, out in the house plumbing, it is a plumber's. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts works on the inlet valve, the fill tube, the mould, the drain and the bin. The shut-off, the buried run and the house pressure belong to the other trade.

Pattern

What we usually find

  1. A starved fill blamed on the machine. The cubes come out short because the supply is throttled somewhere upstream, and a new module changes nothing.
  2. A weeping fitting blamed on the plumbing when the inlet valve behind it has been seeping quietly for months.
  3. Low house pressure that only shows in the ice, because the ice maker is the one appliance that measures water by time rather than by volume.
  4. A saddle valve left over from an earlier kitchen, which is a plumbing part doing an appliance job badly.

Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.

What happens when it turns out to be the other trade

Diagnosis starts at the unit and works outward, because that is the end nobody else opens. If the fault sits past the compression fitting you are told which fitting, which direction and what a plumber will need to do.

Why the order matters

Calling a plumber first on a starved fill usually ends with a pressure reading that looks acceptable and an ice maker still turning out short cubes. Going the other way round settles whether the unit is asking for water and not receiving it, which is the question the plumber then has to answer.

Before you call

Two minutes, before anyone comes out

  1. Trace the line from the cabinet to the first valve you can reach and turn.
  2. Feel along the visible run for damp lagging or a green stain on copper.
  3. Pull the kickplate and look where the line enters, before moving the cabinet.

That is as far as an owner should take it. If what you find does not match this page, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the water path gets measured end to end.
