Water where it should not be

Why does the fill tube keep dripping?

A fill tube that drips between cycles is being fed by a valve that has not shut completely. Each drop freezes where it lands, the bore narrows, and before long the next proper fill is turned aside and runs down the outside of the tube. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts treats the drip as the fault and the ice in the tube as its receipt.

Pattern

What we usually find

  1. Grit or scale resting on the valve seat. The solenoid drops, the seat does not close behind it, and line pressure keeps a slow drip alive.
  2. Pressure fluctuation in the house supply, which Sub-Zero lists first among the reasons a fill tube freezes.
  3. The bin taken out, or the water turned off, with the ice maker left switched on — two more causes Sub-Zero names by hand.
  4. A cube jammed at the mould, holding a cycle open long enough for the tube to close over with ice.

Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.

Why thawing it is only half of it

Melting the tube clear is the right first move and a poor last one. The ice was never the problem; it is what a drip looks like at freezer temperature. Turn the freezer back on with the seat still weeping and the same column rebuilds itself over the following days, usually a little faster than before, because a tube that has iced once rarely dries out completely between cycles.

Never apply heat to it. A fill tube sits against plastic and against wiring, and the shape it holds is the shape the fill needs to keep hitting the mould squarely. Time and a warm compartment do the job without deforming anything.

Before you call

Two minutes, before anyone comes out

  1. Switch the ice maker off and leave the freezer off for four to six hours.
  2. Check that nothing is wedged in the mould before switching it back on.
  3. Whenever the bin comes out for a while, turn the ice maker off as well.

Stop there. If that has not settled it by the next morning, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the rest of the water path gets traced with a meter.
