The ice looks wrong

Why is the ice cloudy?

Cloudy ice is dissolved mineral showing up in frozen form: Sub-Zero attributes it to mineral deposits in the water, made visible as the surface of a cube dries out. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts treats cloudiness as a reading of the water rather than a fault, unless it arrived alongside a drop in output.

A dark ice bin part-full of cubes drawn out of an undercounter machine, with white water tubing, an elbow fitting and a pump housing visible in the cabinet above it

Pattern

What we usually find

  1. Mineral content in the supply. It is the common answer, and it explains why a whole street can have the same milky centre in every cube.
  2. A cartridge well past its useful life, so what it once held back is going straight into the mould.
  3. An interrupted freeze on a machine built to make clear ice — what would have been glass comes out veiled instead.
  4. Cubes that sat in the bin long enough to frost on the outside, which reads as cloudy and is nothing of the kind.

Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.

Cloudy, and still worth a look

Cloudiness on its own costs nothing but appearance. It earns attention when it turns up beside cubes that are getting smaller, because both then point at the same mineral load working away at the inlet screen.

What actually changes it

A fresh cartridge is the first move and the cheapest one. Where the water is heavily mineral, Sub-Zero’s suggestion is an in-line filter ahead of the unit, fitted in the supply rather than in the cabinet. Nothing inside the ice maker makes water clearer; the machine freezes what it is handed.

Before you call

Two minutes, before anyone comes out

  1. Fit a new cartridge if the current one is older than anyone can date.
  2. Discard a bin of ice after the change and judge the batch after that.
  3. Compare a cube from the bin with one frozen in a tray from the tap.

Stop there. If that has not settled it by the next morning, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the rest of the water path gets traced with a meter.
