The water dispenser

Why does the water taste odd after a new filter?

A cartridge straight out of its wrapper puts carbon dust and trapped air into the first water that passes it, and both of those taste of something. Sub-Zero has the first several glasses discarded for that exact reason. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts calls the taste a fault only once the line has been run well past that point and nothing has changed.

Pattern

What we usually find

  1. Carbon fines from the new cartridge, heaviest on the opening draws and gone once the line has been run through properly.
  2. Air trapped in the housing during the change. It makes the pour sputter and leaves a flat, faintly metallic note behind it.
  3. A cartridge that is not fully seated. Sub-Zero's fitting is a clockwise turn until it stops, and it does not click, so it is easy to leave short.
  4. The house supply itself, which no cartridge ever promised to correct. A glass drawn at another tap settles that question in a minute.

Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.

How much to run before judging it

Purge generously. Sub-Zero’s instruction for ice after a filter change is to throw away the first full bucket the machine produces, and water deserves the same treatment on a smaller scale: draw and tip several glasses, then leave it overnight and draw one more in the morning. A taste that has faded between those two glasses is doing what a new cartridge does. A taste that has not moved at all is telling you about something other than carbon dust.

At that point the question divides neatly. If the same taste is present at the kitchen tap, it came into the house and the cartridge is innocent. If it is only at the dispenser, the seat, the housing or the cartridge itself is worth looking at, and Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts can be reached on (720) 903-2603.
