The ice looks wrong
Why does the ice smell like the freezer?
Ice takes on the smell of the compartment because the bin is open to it. Frozen water slowly sublimates, and what it gives up is replaced by the air around it. Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts starts with old ice and uncovered food, and only then turns to the water side of the problem.
Pattern
What we usually find
- Ice that has been in the bin for weeks. Time is the main ingredient here; a slow household makes smelly ice with nothing broken.
- Strong food stored loose in the same compartment — fish, a cut onion, anything in a bag that is not properly closed.
- A spill dried onto the bin or the shelf beneath it, which keeps releasing while the ice sits above.
- A filter long overdue, where the smell is arriving with the water and the freezer is being blamed for it.
Most often first. Order comes from what the visits keep turning up, not from a count.
The test that settles it
Throw the old ice away, wash and dry the bin, cover everything strongly flavoured around it, and taste the batch after next. If that one is clean, the air was the carrier. If the smell comes back with new ice, the water is bringing it in and the cartridge is the next thing to change.
When it is the cabinet, not the ice
A compartment that smells as the door opens is reporting something apart from the ice maker. That is a cleaning job, and sometimes a door seal no longer closing, and the ice will keep repeating the message until the source is gone.
Before you call
Two minutes, before anyone comes out
- Empty the bin, wash it in warm soapy water and dry it fully.
- Change the cartridge if the new batch still smells after a clean bin.
- Cover or bag anything strongly flavoured stored in the same compartment.
Stop there. If that has not settled it by the next morning, call Denver Sub-Zero Repair Experts on (720) 903-2603 and the rest of the water path gets traced with a meter.
